SYRIAN BEAN-CAPER
Back

Syrian Bean-caper is a perennial that exhibits annual growth traits in regions with harsh winters. Leaves are succulent, opposite, and compound. Stems are smooth, thickened and up to 1 ½ feet tall, giving the plant a bushy appearance. It spreads by seeds and by lateral roots. Seeds can be moved with soil during tillage, construction, or other activities. Syrian bean-caper appears to be unpalatable to livestock; cattle did not graze it in an infested pasture

Control

Mechanical: Hand pulling is not recommended. Syrian bean-caper breaks off easily, leaving a stout taproot and long lateral roots in the soil. Although time consuming, thorough removal of the roots can eliminate small populations.
Biological: There are no bio-control agents available for Syrian bean-caper.
Herbicide: Syrian bean-caper leaves have a smooth waxy surface that is difficult to wet with herbicidal sprays. Product containing metsulfuron appears promising in initial trials in rangelands, pastures and other non-crop areas.
When choosing any kind of control method, assure that your choice is suited for your particular situation. Always read and follow the product label before applying any herbicide
