SKELETONLEAF BURSAGE
Back

Skeletonleaf bursage is a long-lived perennial with an extensive, creeping rootstock. It can grow up to 3 feet tall depending on soil moisture. It spreads both by seed and root. The flowers are green and inconspicuous. Infestations can produce 40 million seeds per acre. It tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions, typically in meadows, pastures, dry rangeland, and other non-crop areas. Skeletonleaf bursage is difficult to eradicate due to its extensive horizontal root system. It is also unpalatable to livestock.

Control

Mechanical: The deep and extensive root systems make hand pulling ineffective. Mowing will not eliminate it and may also stimulate additional shoot growth from root buds, however, it can delay or reduce seed production.
Biological: There are no control agents available for this noxious weed.
Chemical: Herbicide containing picloram has proven to be the most effective in rangelands, pastures and other non-crop areas. Picloram is a "Restricted Use" product that can only be applied by a licensed applicator.
When choosing any kind of control method, assure that your choice is suited for your particular situation. Always read and follow the product label before applying any herbicide.
